Special Exhibition: Greenham – War and Peace

27 September 10:00

Runs until December 2018. Celebrating the history of Greenham Common to coincide with Greenham Common Trust’s 20th anniversary since the former RAF airbase was returned to nature.

This exhibition looks back at the unique heritage of Greenham Common, particularly looking at the wider history of war and peace on the Common, from 1199 when it was given to the military order of monks, the Knights Hospitaller, to the Civil War. In the twentieth century its history includes tank testing on the Common during the First World War; its time as an RAF/USAF airbase in World War 2 when Eisenhower delivered his speech to paratroopers departing for D-Day; the Cold War missile base and peace protests of the 1980s and more recently its transfer back to common land.

Our second floor galleries host a series of special exhibitions, along with Gallery 5 which can be hired to display original artwork, sculpture and crafts.

Entry to West Berkshire Museum is free but donations are most welcomed.
Wednesday – Sunday 10am -4pm.
