Talk: Sugar and Spice and All Things Nice

16 January 19:00

Every November many homes in Europe and North America still waft with the smell of freshly baked gingerbread, cinnamon infused mulled wine and richly spiced fruitcake, puddings and pumpkin pie. Familiar spices such as nutmeg, cloves, allspice, cinnamon and ginger are synonymous with Christmas.

However, the history of these common place spices takes us across time and continents, with people risking life and limb to bring them home.

Following the history and geography of the Spice Trail, researcher and educational consultant Lynda Warren will lead us on a journey to discover their use in cooking, medicines, cosmetics and household purposes, supported by a free handout for those who are interested in finding out more.
