Game of Queens – Charivari Agréable26 November 14:00
Award winning early music ensemble Charivari Agréable return to Shaw House with a new matinée performance for 2017.
Game of Queens tells the extraordinary story of the 16th century female monarchs, consorts and regents who wielded power in England, Scotland and France and the complex relations between these three Kingdoms. Daughters, wives and mothers of Kings, this “monstrous regiment of women” found themselves carving out new roles as rulers and diplomats in a world fractured by the Reformation into powerful religious and dynastic factions.
Isobel Collyer, Layil Barr and Kah-Ming Ng once more take us back to a time when Shaw House was a new and lively country mansion, and fill its Great Hall with the music, speeches and poetry of the period, performing music by Attaignant, Arbeau, Bataille, Dowland and Guédron, as well as the sonnets and speeches of Shakespeare.
Isobel Collyer: Narrator and Soprano
Layil Barr: Recorders and Viol
Kah-Ming Ng: Virginals
